Rebecca Lewis – Yoga Teacher

At first it was pure curiosity that brought me to yoga at age sixteen. After trying several different yoga classes I found an inspiring yoga teacher who blended different styles of yoga with ease and grace and nurtured my young mind with peace and compassion. I knew I’d found the right teacher for me. I loved the physical elements of yoga and was also inspired to learn about the philosophy behind this ancient art form. My studies of eastern philosophy at university helped me to gain greater understanding of eastern wisdom and deepened my commitment to yoga. The connection I could now make between philosophical understanding and the physical practice enabled me to appreciate yoga above and beyond the numerous physical benefits.  I continued to practice under the guidance of my teacher who continued to inspire me, and secretly wished that someday I might feel confident enough to teach others as she did. After the birth of my son Max, I felt a greater pull towards venturing down the yoga teacher training path. I kept practicing with my teacher but also decided to broaden my experience of yoga by trying other styles of yoga with many different teachers, while reading as much as I could about yoga.  I couldn’t get enough, and I still can’t get enough!!

Yoga helped me keep things in perspective during challenging times, especially those testing times as a new mother. Yoga truly helped me in my toughest hours – when I found out my son had a genetic condition that would impact the rest of his life. My husband and I were told very little, his condition was rare; one of a kind and his development would be delayed to an unknown extent.

A great amount of angst arose inside at the prospect of having to live without knowing what lay ahead for Max. Many desires and dreams I hadn’t even consciously realized that I held for his life seemed instantly dashed. I can truly say that during this time yoga was my savior.  My time on the mat was my time for nurturing myself – body mind and spirit - with compassion and love, letting go of worries with each conscious breath out, while inviting fresh vitality, optimism and acceptance with each breath in. Yoga helped me to stay with the bigger picture but it was Max’s precious existence that helped me truly put into practice what I believe to be one of the greatest lessons of Yoga – Surrender expectations and focus on the moment; cherish each step along the way no matter how difficult or easy; Be present Now, with hope, love and compassion for yourself and others.

Willow was born two years after Max (my second precious gift).  After her first birthday, thanks to the support of family and friends, I was able to embark on two years of full time yoga teacher training at the CAE through the Australian Institute of Yoga Therapy.  This was an incredible journey under the guidance of a number of inspiring senior yoga teachers from various yoga lineages.  My choice to train under such eclectic guidance reflected my desire to stream as much varied knowledge of yoga into my practice and into the way I would teach.

I’ve been teaching yoga since 2004 and my classes reflect my eclectic knowledge of yoga. I have great respect for the yoga tradition and always aim to weave philosophical and esoteric aspects of this ancient practice into my classes.  I consider myself to be an on going student of yoga, delighted to be able to share the knowledge I have gained thus far.

My classes have great emphasis on the connection between body movement and breath awareness, with an aim of keeping the mind present in meditation to the moment, while building greater self awareness. All of my classes include asana (yoga postures/movement), pranayama (breathing techniques), and guided savasana (relaxation).

For me the numerous health benefits of yoga are surely a call to the mat. Combined with the wisdom of yoga that constantly invites me to nurture myself and others with respect, love and compassion, I can’t help but to believe that yoga is a practice for everyone.

Rebecca is a qualified yoga teacher with an advanced diploma of yoga teaching from the Australian Institute of Yoga Therapy. She is also a member of the Yoga Teachers Association of Australia (YTAA) and the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
